Cameron Scores Four, Mustangs Beat Moose 9-0

Auburn, ME – CMCC Men's Soccer put on a scoring display in their 2025 home opener, tallying eight goals in the first half and defeating in-state rival UMaine-Augusta 9-0 in front of a crowd of fans out for Central Maine's Spirit Day. Sophomore captain Mitch Cameron scored four times in the first 25 minutes, propelling him to the top of the USCAA scoring charts in a tie with teammate Daniel Semple, while Albie Fozard-Oakes dealt out four assists.

It was a match-up of teams at the top and bottom of the YSCC standings with the Moose entering the game with a 0-6-0 record and having scored only one goal on the season. The Mustangs were coming off a five-game road trip and had just scored seven against VTSU-Randolph.

It didn't take long for the barrage of goals to start. Matty Waters worked a short corner kick routine with Fozard-Oakes before sending in a low cross towards the front post. Cameron lost his marker and nipped in to redirect the ball past goalkeeper Jaxon August with a smart finish. That made it 1-0 just one tick of the clock beyond five minutes in.

Fozard-Oakes picked up the assist on the second tally in the 16th minute. The freshman out Knutsford Academy in England cut to the right side of the box before picking out his former older schoolmate with a cross at the back post. Cameron rose highest to nod the ball into the top corner for his second of the half.

Semple made it 3-0 just four minutes later. Mikel Soto sent the ball down the right for Fozard-Oakes who had a much deeper cross to make from the touchline. His delivery was once again spot on though, and Semple met it on the volley from the six-yard box.

Cameron finished off his first half hat trick in the 23rd minute. UMA winger Isaac Austin under hit his back pass towards August in goal, and Semple put the keeper under pressure forcing a bad clearance. The ball pinged directly to Cameron who was 25 yards out, and the midfielder simply chipped the ball over his head and into the gaping net behind him.

His fourth goal was nearly identical to his first and came less than a minute later. Fozard-Oakes again crossed a diagonal ball towards the near post and Cameron ghosted into the box unmarked between two defenders, hitting a one-touch volley past the stranded goalkeeper. That made it 5-0 in the 24th minute and proved to be Cameron's last action of the half, being subbed off immediately after.

That did not stop the ball from going into the net, however. Semple provided his second of the night in the 26th minute. Fozard-Oakes cross pinballed off a defender and the goalkeeper, deflecting up into the air on the goal line. Semple reacted quickest, heading the ball down and across the line just before the valiantly diving August could get a hand on it to knock it away.

Head coach Dalton Wing made a host of first-half changes, subbing out nearly his entire starting lineup. Those players were eager to get in on the scoring act themselves though and added two more before the break.

Walk-on forward Isaac Breau was Johnny-on-the-spot to score his first career goal in the 32nd minute. Yoan Thériault curled in a shot that was saved by August, but the rebound spilled in front of him in the box. Michael Quinn, fresh off his first career goal in the previous match, got to it first only to see the goalkeeper make an incredible leg save from point-blank range. Breau kept making his run forward and the Winthrop High School product was rewarded with a tap-in on the rebound for a 7-0 lead.

Quinn then got his goal in front of the home crowd with 35 seconds left in the half. Stephan Samba rocketed a shot from distance that hit the post and bounced away. Harrison Garcia, who had scored his first goal a year earlier against the Moose, crossed in the rebound from the left wing, picking out the forward from England in the box for a tidy flicked finish with the outside of his right foot.

Central Maine finished the half with 35 total shots, putting 22 on target. Jaxon August was outstanding in goal for UMA, making plenty of highlight reel stops for a total of 14 saves in just the first half alone. The Mustangs had a more reserved approach to the game in the second, but still mustered another 35 shots, drawing 11 more saves from the Moose keeper. His best work of the night was a miraculous double save in the 76th minute, stopping a curling effort from Samba and getting back up in time to somehow tip a point-blank drive from Quinn up and over the crossbar.

CMCC finally added their ninth goal with under three minutes to play. Sam Boynton whipped in an in-swinging corner kick, and freshman midfielder Angello Del Vechio Arias, the smallest player on the field, won the header to nod it back towards the middle of the goal. Fellow first-year Drew Hatala had his back to the net but quickly reacted with a bicycle kick to volley the shot home.

The dominating victory sees Central Maine improve to 4-0-1 overall and 2-0-0 in conference play. The Mustangs are ranked #1 in the USCAA DII polls and next dive back into non-conference play to end the week with matches on the road against archrival SMCC and USCAA DI opponent UMaine-Fort Kent.
