Crazy 8s: Seawolves Take 8th Straight Win
SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — The Southern Maine Community College men's basketball team took a 90-44 conference victory over Word of Life on Saturday afternoon at The HUB, extending its winning streak to eight games.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Word of life struck first with a pair of jumpers before SMCC shook off the early deficit. Sam DeWitt (Hudson, N.H.) knocked down a three to get the Seawolves on the board, and Chance Mercier (Ellsworth, Maine) followed with a triple of his own to swing momentum.
Nathan Mugisha (Rwanda, East Africa) finished at the rim and connected on a pair of threes and threw down a dunk as SMCC began to pull away. Mercier added another three ball following a steal, and the Seawolves used a 17-3 run midway through the half to open up separation. Mercier capped the surge with a three off a DeWitt assist, pushing the lead to 37-25 heading into the break.
SMCC came out firing in the second half. Ellis Macea (Lawrence, Mass.) opened it up with a layup before Mercier drilled another three on the opening minute. Mugisha followed with a layup, and the Seawolves rattled off an early 13-0 run to stretch the lead past 50. Sean Bosia (Dracut, Mass.) scored in transition and around the rim, while Macea and Franck Moron (Billerica, Mass.) added buckets to keep the pressure on.
The Seawolves used their depth as Jace Bessey (Jay, Maine) knocked down a three, Josh Jones (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) connected from deep, and Jeremy Therrien (Wells, Maine) knocked down two quick threes, whilst Danny Luna (Lowell, Mass.), and Emil Hernandez (South Portland, Maine) capped the 46-point victory.
