YSCC Adds Washington County as Newest Member

Calais, ME – The Yankee Small College Conference is happy to announce that Washington County Community College has been accepted as its newest member, joining the league in the 2026-27 season. The Golden Eagles are the 12th full-time member of the YSCC and will have their men's and women's basketball, golf, and cross country teams competing in conference play next year.

"Members of the Yankee Small College Conference look forward to a successful partnership and anticipate the positive impact Washington County Community College will have on the competitive balance and collegiality of the conference," YSCC Commissioner John Daileanes said. "We are excited for Washington County student-athletes to begin competing in the upcoming seasons."

The vote to approve Washington County's application to join the Yankee Small College Conference is the culmination of more than a year's worth of work. WCCC revived its athletic programs in 2023 with its two basketball teams, adding golf and cross country to its offerings over the past two years. The campus, based in eastern Maine, is the second full member from the Maine Community College System added to the YSCC in the last two years, joining Kennebec Valley.

"Being accepted into membership of the YSCC is absolutely huge for the growth of athletics here at Washington County Community College," said Director of Athletics Seth Martin. "It will allow our student-athletes to have more goals, such as playing for a tournament championship and being on an all-conference team. Being in a league will also help us with scheduling games and not having to travel as far, therefore allowing our student-athletes more time in the classroom. I'm very excited for the opportunity being part of the YSCC gives us."

The Golden Eagles will have familiarity with most of the teams in the conference, having played against the majority of YSCC members over the past two seasons. The WCCC athletic program is also still expanding. This summer, the campus completed renovations on its basketball court in St. Croix Hall, and future plans include adding volleyball and soccer teams at the school.

"Joining the Yankee Small College Conference is an exciting and important step forward that strengthens our commitment to providing students with a well-rounded college experience that includes competitive athletics, teamwork, and meaningful campus engagement." said Dr. Tyler Stoldt, Dean of Enrollment Management and Student Services.

Washington County is part of the Maine Community College System and serves students across the region with career-focused academic programs, student support services, and opportunities for leadership and engagement both in and out of the classroom.
