The final game in the YSCC Elite 8 Quarterfinal
round saw the Vermont Technical College Knights escape with a 72-70
victory over the Central Maine Community College Mustangs.
The Mustangs carried a seven point lead into half time but it was
quickly erased in the second half. The game went back and
forth for the final 20 minutes of play with the Mustangs failing to
convert several attempts to tie. The Knights were led by a
double-double effort from Jamal Hughes who finished with 22 points
and 10 rebounds. Carrington Miller led the way for the
Mustangs in the losing effort with 20 points and 8
rebounds.
The third matchup in the YSCC Men’s Elite
8 Quarterfinal round featured tournament hosts the NHTI Lynx and
U-Maine Machias Clippers. The U-Maine Machias Clippers topped
the NHTI Lynx 89-74. The Clippers held a 12 point lead at the
half and would hold on in the second half despite only outscoring
the Lynx by three in the second half. The Clippers were led
by four players in double digits; both Ben Teer and Floyd Higgins
scored 16 points, Higgins also added 11 rebounds. The Lynx
were led by a pair of scorers, Yordy Tavarez and Ethan
Rutledge. Tavarez scored 32 points and Rutledge added 20
points in the loss to U-Maine
Machias.
In the second game of the of the YSCC
Men’s Elite 8 Quarterfinal round, Southern Maine Community
College defeated Eastern Maine Community College 77-60.
Southern Maine jumped to a 38-19 lead after the first half, but
Eastern Maine would make things interesting in the second half by
out-scoring Southern Maine 41-39. Southern Maine had a
balanced scoring attack, with four players in double digits.
Tyheem Simon led the Sea Wolves in scoring with 18 points.
The Golden Eagles had three players in double figures in points and
were led by Brett Deniger who had 20
points.
In the opening game of the YSCC Men’s
Elite 8 Quarterfinal round, the College of St. Joseph’s
defeated U-Maine Augusta 86-81. The game between the Fighting
Saints and the Moose was close throughout with the Fighting Saints
pulling away with the win in the last minute of play. St.
Joseph’s was led by Dre Anderson and Kashean Alston who both
finished with double-double numbers. Anderson finished with
24 points and 10 rebounds, while Alston finished with 19 points and
12 rebounds. U-Maine Augusta was led by a pair of players as
well, Brandon Rodgers and Keith Chesley. Rogers posted a
double-double with 28 points and 14 rebounds. Chesley
finished with 21 points in the losing effort.
