Women’s Basketball:
#2 U-Maine Machias 64 - #4 Central Maine Community College 70
Men’s Basketball:
#4 Vermont Tech 60 - #6 NHTI 52
CONCORD, N.H. — NHTI, Concord’s Community College was the host site for the YSCC Women’s and Men’s Basketball Championship games. The number four seeded Central Maine Community College women topped the number two U-Maine Machias 70-64 to capture the YSCC Women’s Basketball title. In the men’s championship game number four Vermont Tech defeated the number six seeded NHTI men 60-52. Both the CMCC women and the VTC men have earned an automatic bid to the USCAA National Basketball Championships held in Fayette, PA in early March.
CMCC was paced by Ariel McConkey (20 points with six rebounds and five steals), Kayla Ellis (11 points with five boards), Danielle McCusker (13 points with eight rebounds) and Maggie Sabine (14 points with 10 rebounds and four steals. The Clippers of UMM were led by Kayla Wood (12 points with 10 rebounds), Dana Houghton (nine points with 11 rebounds and four assists), Jamyriah McPherson (14 points), and Dana Houghton (nine points with 11 boards and four assists).
Kevin Carr (26 points with five rebounds), Alex Tyrrell (11 points), and Josh Lindsey (nine points with 13 boards) were the leaders for VTC. Leading NHTI in the loss were Ahntwan Harris (Los Alamitos, CA) 13 points, Besfort Syla (Manchester) 11 points, Tyler Yeaton (Pembroke) nine rebounds, and Ryan Sweeney (Hudson) eight points with two blocks.
Several players were honored for their efforts during this weekend’s tournament. On the women’s side Kayla Wood (UMM) was named the tournament’s Best Defensive Player, Ariel McConkey (CMCC) was named the tournament’s Best Offensive Player, and Maggie Sabine (CMCC) was named the Tournament MVP. For the men, Ahntwan Harris (NHTI) was named the tournaments Best Offensive Player, Josh Lindsay (VTC) was named the Best Defensive Player, and Kevin Carr (VTC) was named the Tournament MVP.
