Randolph, VT (CMCC) - The Central Maine Mustangs Women's Soccer team hit the road on Saturday, traveling to Randolph, Vermont to take on the Knights of Vermont Technical College in a Yankee Small College Conference matchup. The Mustangs, coming off an opening day loss on the road in Machias last week were looking to get back on track by evening up their conference record.
The first half was very evenly played up and down the field with the Mustangs having the edge in time of possession, but the Knights were taking more shots. Neither team was able to gain a significant advantage and the first half ended 0-0.
The second half was a different story as both teams came out of the break with an attacking mentality. Samantha Belardo (Russell, MA) with her first collegiate goal, opened the scoring for the Mustangs off a perfect pass through the Knights defense by Savannah Fisher (Lisbon, ME). The Knights would counter ten minutes later on a goal by Dayna Goodell to tie it up at 1-1.
Twenty minutes into the second half freshman Katelynn Greene (Poland, ME) notched her first collegiate goal intercepting a pass at midfield and breaking through the Vermont defense to score unassisted to put the Mustangs ahead 2-1. A hand ball in the box by the Mustangs led to Emily Grady converting the penalty kick for Vermont to tie the score again at 2-2. With less than ten minutes to go in the game, freshman Rachel Dunn(Marshfield, MA) got the game-winner, her second goal of the year on a shot from just outside the penalty area off a pass by Deliah Schreiber (Lisbon, ME) to give the Mustangs the lead 3-2. Five minutes later, Schreiber would put Central Maine comfortably ahead by converting a penalty kick and the Mustangs finished the game with a 4-2 win, their first conference win of the year.
Freshman goalkeeper Skyler Henry (Waterford, CT), in her first collegiate game in the net, earned the win with a 6 save performance.
Central Maine travels to South Portland on Tuesday September 11, to take on the Seawolves of Southern Maine Community College in a 4:00pm kickoff.
